The Question That Changed My Life: "Do You Want to Watch Me Give Birth?”: A Birth Doula's Story

birth doula story

There are moments in life that don't feel life-changing when they're happening.

They're just conversations.

A simple question.

An ordinary day.

Then years later, you look back and realize everything started there.

For me, it was one question my mom asked when I was a teenager.

"Do you want to watch me give birth?"

Most people would probably say no.

I didn't even hesitate.

My answer was yes.

Looking back now, I don't think either of us knew how much that one question would shape the rest of my life.

Before That Question, I Already Loved Birth

Long before I knew what a doula was, I was fascinated by pregnancy, babies, and the medical field.

I was the kid watching medical shows because I genuinely wanted to.

I loved learning about the human body.

I was curious about how pregnancy worked.

Birth didn't scare me.

It fascinated me.

At the time, I thought becoming an OB-GYN was the only path that made sense.

I wanted to help bring babies into the world. I just didn't know what that would look like yet.

Then My Mom Asked Me One Question

I was 14 years old when my mom became pregnant with my little sister.

One day, she asked me if I wanted to be there when she gave birth.

For a lot of teenagers, that probably sounds like the last place they'd want to be.

For me...

It sounded like the greatest opportunity in the world.

I wasn't nervous.

I wasn't uncomfortable.

I was excited.

I wanted to see everything.

I wanted to understand what birth actually looked like beyond the books and television shows I'd watched.

So when the day came, I was there.

Watching My Sister Enter the World

My mom had a positive induction supported by a midwife.

I watched labor unfold in real time.

I watched the strength it took.

I watched the teamwork.

I watched the quiet moments.

And then...

I watched my little sister enter the world.

I even had the opportunity to cut the umbilical cord.

It's a moment I'll never forget.

Not because it was dramatic. But because it felt deeply human.

Birth wasn't loud or chaotic like the movies often make it seem.

It was powerful.

It was intentional.

It was full of love.

And somehow, watching it made something click inside me.

I Left That Room Different

When I walked into that birth room, I was curious.

When I walked out, I knew my life had changed.

I couldn't fully explain it at 14.

I just knew I wanted to spend my life helping families through moments like that.

I didn't know exactly what career that would become.

I didn't know what being a doula was.

I certainly didn't know where life would take me.

But I knew birth had become more than an interest.

It had become part of who I was.

Looking Back, I Understand Why That Moment Mattered

Sometimes people ask when I knew birth work was my calling.

They're usually expecting me to talk about becoming certified.

Or supporting my first client.

Or starting Haven Place Doulas.

But honestly...

It started much earlier than that.

It started with curiosity.

It grew through one unforgettable experience.

And it stayed with me every year afterward.

That one birth helped me realize that birth isn't simply about welcoming a baby.

It's also about supporting the person giving birth.

It's about creating an environment where families feel informed, respected, and cared for.

I didn't have those words at 14. I do now.

The Question Still Stays With Me

More than 15 years have passed since my mom asked me that simple question.

I've now had the privilege of supporting more than 100 births.

I've become both a birth and postpartum doula.

I've walked alongside families through joy, uncertainty, long labors, unexpected changes, and beautiful first moments.

But every now and then, I think back to that teenager sitting in a birth room for the very first time.

She had no idea what was ahead.

She didn't know she'd one day dedicate her life to supporting growing families.

She didn't know she'd build Haven Place Doulas.

She just knew she had witnessed something extraordinary.

And honestly...

She was right.

The Beginning of My Birth Doula Story

Looking back, I realize that my birth doula story didn't begin with a certification, a business, or even my first client.

It began with curiosity.

With saying yes to an opportunity that most teenagers probably would have passed on.

With watching my mom welcome my little sister into the world.

That one question changed the direction of my life.

Today, every family I support reminds me why that moment mattered.

Because birth is never just about the day a baby is born.

It's about the people, the memories, and the moments that stay with you forever.

I'm grateful that one simple question led me here.

And I'm even more grateful that I still get to answer my own calling every time a family invites me into one of the most meaningful days of their lives.
